PLIGHT OF ADIVASIS IN ORISSA

Dear Sir/Madam, Krishna Janmashtami Greetings from CEFS-New Delhi! During last one month, hundreds of poor Adivasis in Rayagada, Koraput and Kalahandi districts of Orissa have died due to “consumption of contaminated water and rotten food” and “hunger and severe food insecurity ”.On the basis of a study carried out in 100 villages of Orissa, Delhi-based Centre forEnvironment and Food security (CEFS) firmly believes that it is not the epidemic of cholera but cancer of corruption that is killing hundreds of poor Adivasis and crippling millions of them. Cholera is only a symptom and by-product, the root cause is the cancer of corruption which has colonized and crippled all the vital organs of Orissa administration. Abject poverty and chronic hunger manufactured by the self-serving bureaucracy of Orissa are the main reasons behind these tragic deaths of Adivasis. Most of these Adivasis live a life of semi-starvation which cripples their immune system and their bodies become vulnerable to a...

Primary Education- dismal picture

The Ruling Class is agog with its achievement in the field of education. It says on all occasions that Puducherry is developed in Education. We have to straighten the records that they mean the collegiate Education. Private Players of all hues, from all directions, have been invited and afforded land ,water, electricity and other facilities, as a result they have started their "education business" and set their foothold in the small eco-fragile Region. Institutions have developed.Their business have trebled, quality of lifestyle have improved.Their coffers are constantly filled by capitations, but not the quality of education.Proliferation of institutions in lanes and sub-lanes, and farm fields, driving away the locals, alienating their mens of sustenance and transforming their lives as wage earners do not mean the enhancement in quality of life of the school going and the college going. While the government figures indicate that the drop out in primary education is 45% is a ...

Sinking Values

The Government of India, people say, have taken a U- turn in permitting the visit of the U.S. Nimitz in Indian seas, few miles off the coast of Chennai. This has been done unusually since Independence. Some intellectuals ask, while New Zealand in the past had refused permission for nuclear-powered vessel of the U.S.A. to dock in its Port, how the Government in India has conceded to such a call? While Reports speak of atleast 1200 major accidents, " which have resulted in the dozens of ship sinkings, hundreds of explosions and fires, costly repairs and loss of life,"it also adds, " 50 nuclear war heads and nine nuclear reactors are lying on the ocean floor". The 'audacious' attempt of the Government against the protest of the Left and other Parties, has raised many eye-brows. The Administration owes open and forth right explanation in not addressing the serious concerns, particularly the 'Nuclear Question.' Friendship and promotion are not at the cost...

Rise of Crimes in Puducherry- An analysis-1

The Puducherry has been witnessing serial attacks and counter attacks by goons, groups, anti-social elements, disrupting public life and instilling fear psychosis in the minds of common man. Traders, vendors and business people, who are already suffering from 'Collection Raj' from lumpens are scared and worried over reprisal killing near their business places. In proportion to the area and size of the population the increase in crime graph in the State is quite alarming. Every day, news of crimes committed in unique fashion, has already affected the fame and name of the much talked about 'Peace Town'. Peace is in pieces and hangs its head in abysmal shame. A Region's prosperity, as we all know is to be assessed not in terms of its glittering roads, high-rise buildings, Halls, Mals or other cosmetic developments. When tranquility and order of the Society is in constant peril and the 'Rule of Law' has taken the backseat, all tall talk about growth and developm...

ENCOUNTER MURDERS- CASTE, RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND

I come from the Union Territory of Puducherry, which has no record of encounter murders, except case of lock-up deaths. I am extremely happy to participate in the all India Conference. I am particularly thankful to Mr.Agni Subramaniam, the President of'Agni'. Also I extend my gratitude to the organisers of the event for providing me an opportunity, to meet and listen to the speakers and acquaint with their rich and varied experiences. our organisation had a humble beginning in 1989, dedicated to the cause of human rights in Pondicherry. on behalf of the Federation, I would like to share with you a few thoughts, on the topic 'Encounter murders- caste, religious Background' Encounter murders are basically against the spirit of the Constitution of India, which assures the right to freedom of life to all citizens. Whereas, the Indian Penal code, under chapter 7 has provided for physical elimination of a person by a police officer, in exercise of self defence. This anamalous...
