KARNATAKA POLL RESULT- A REFLECTION

The poll result of Karnataka much expected to be an acid test for the Congress in view of the oncoming Parliamentary Elections in 2009 would not shatter its hopes. In a sense, it has improved its performance at the cost of Janata Dal(secular). Mr.Dewa Gowda's moves with the B.J.P., however, in the last ministry has not gone well with the people. As a result suffered erosion in it's strength. Figures like ,Vattal Nagaraj, and Bangarappa do not have their stakes they commanded earlier and their stature seems have gone to Mr. Yeddyuruppa, the C.M.elect, particularly after the Hoegnekkal -Show, he led. The verdict totally not in support of the saffron-brigade and people have given a fractured verdict. Only wafer thin majority is dispensed to the B.J.P. and the opposition combine together is nearly matching the figure of more than 100 would be a healthy situation, where issues concerning the State and the people can be vociferously and effectivly put forth. It is appropriate that th...

oil prices hike

Sir, The resource of hydro-carbons is going to last for a few hundred years. Already alarm-bells started ringing in developed countries for economic use and research in finding alternative source of energy.Use of gasoline, ethanol as fuels are started picking up in some countries in the American Continent. Fancy buying of vehicles, frantic effort of Corporates in introducing new brands without fuel efficiency, hire-purchase, easy instalment schemes are also driving people to go in for more vehicles.Even in a family, possession of two or more vehicles have often become showy rather than necessity. This attitude goes against the national interest. People should be educated and sensitised on the effects of global warming and the scant resource at the disposal of humanity. Some regulations at the executive level, like closing the petrol bunks at 10 P.M. every day and declaring weekly off, would certainly pay results, apart from encouraging the public to large scale use of public transport ...

INIQUITOUS APPROACH

Solidarity and support extended to the Tibetans by the Government and others in their long drawn struggle on humanitarian basis, including setting up of their Government-in-exile are appreciable.Tibetans are permitted to do business, conduct studies and move freely to garner support for their cause.while when it comes to incarceration and subjugation of ethnic Tamils elsewhere, including the heinous crimes and serious human rights violations committed against Sri Lankan Tamils for more than four decades, the Government and others are not serious except paying lip service for propaganda values. If involving in Tibet's internal affairs is not condemnable and objectionable, reacting to oppression and suppression of Tamils inside is viewed by the establishment as transgression of limits. such iniquitous and partisan approach should be exposed to the world community and public opinion awakened.

STOIC SILENCE!

Competitive Entrance Test For Admission To Colleges introduced in the Education System of Puducherry on the pattern of TamilNadu, after Higher Secondary Course is still continued, even after the neighboring State had abolished, amidst difficulties expressed from various sections of Society, more particularly the ordeals faced by rural folk last year. From then the political parties and social action groups interested in the students welfare have been insisting the Government of Puducherry to do away with the CENTAC. In the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister assured the Members that a decision would be taken next year. Now the Students Community and their parents are agitated and feeling uncertainties as the 'Coaching Business Cartels" have set their target and started issuing applications for screening tests and launch of the classes soon. Meanwhile, parents associations, political parties and social action groups have been conducting call attention programs to remind the...

SHE

Sir, The Article by SEEMA MUSTAFA , Dated 9th February,2008, on the approach to Women's Reservation Bill. The author has stated that" all found excuses to stop this......that OBC and Dalit women should be given special privileges, and cannot be equated with all women.".The argument put forth by the supporters of providing inner reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward in the Caste System, i.e.for OBC women and Dalit women. All are women, no doubt.Equating upper caste women on par with the OBCc and Dalita, reveals our ignorance of the existing socio-economic and political realities in Society.Within the Family, no doubt women of all castes are oppressed and discriminated. But it cannot be advanced as an argument for this concrete situation, to suggest a race among unequals for a place in Legislatures and Parliaments under Reservation. Yours faithfully, M.Muthukannu 09.02.08. Puducherry.

Recent attacks in Mumbai

Image
Sir, This has reference to the Report on the Captioned Subject, Dated 4th instant.Regional Passion and hatred nurtured for short term political gains have again raises its ugly head. Notorious 'Mumbai Riots' and large scale sufferings faced by Muslims and Madrasis, have already brought disgrace to the Country. The Political Parties of all streams should in one voice oppose the recent attacks in Mumbai and other places of the State of Maharashtra.Let sense prevail on the senseless. Yours Faithfully, M.Muthukannu. Puducherry, 5,February,2008.

ORGANISED RACKET

Sir, This is with regard to the editorial, "Organ racket" dated 31st,January 2008. It is not only organ racket but organized racket.Every time when it is exposed, eyebrows are raised, statements are issued Nationally and notionally. The Governments,be it the Tamil Nadu or the popular Uttar Pradesh do act temporarily and highlight achievements of the Police in filing cases against the mafia- who are supposed to be educated and belonged to creamy layers of the Society. What is lacking is the identification of the basic issues involved and preventive measures adopted by the States in arresting the menace and averting the dangers, to which the hapless poor fisher folk in Chennai in the past after tsunami struck were exposed. And now it is the turn of notorious Gurgaon , whether it is butchering of children for big-bucks or for oppressing the legitimate struggle of the working class in Hyundai, or still the high pitch sale in Human Organs in the garb of the much touted Medical...
