Need of the Hour

In Puducherry, the Government had constituted the Human Rights Committee in 2001, particularly after the Supreme Court Directions given to the Chief Justice Of the High Court of Judicature , Chennai. D.K.Basu,s case was an eye opener to almost all the Governments, to strictly instruct the Police Force, to follow the 13 guidelines issued by the Apex Court in the Case. The Government of Puducherry had in consultation with the High court had established the Human Rights Commmittee. The Parliament of India had passed the Human Rights Act in 1983 and the Act was extended to all the states of India, except Jammu and Kashmir. Thus, it had been extended to the Union Territory by endorsement in the Local Gazette by way of re-publication. Yet the Committee has not been replaced and a Commission constituted in deference to the provisions of the Central Act. WAR ON TERROR

Sir, "550 lives lost to 11 terrorist attacks across India in the last three years". As usual discussions on print and electronic media will continue.Blames and counter blames will appear. What has been lost in the midst of hair-splitting statements is the responsibility of citizen to share information with the police force, whenever suspicious activities are noticed in the day-to- day lives in society. Youths of this country, really can play meaningful role in helping intelligence agencies in tackling the situation on regular basis.People-vigilante groups could also contribute their mite in supplying clues or informations.The society as a whole should be sensitized to assume responsibilities in driving away the forces of terrorism- a common enemy to harmony and peaceful co-existence. Let us all condemn in un-ambiguous terms that forces of divisiveness and fisifarous tendencies will not succeed in their attempt to derail democracy and secularism in India. fatihfully yours
