Nuclear Nationalism!

The recent withdrawal of support by the Left Parties to the ruling U.P.A. at the Centre has raised serious after discussions in the Country, as to the desirability of the Nuclear Deal entered with the U.S.A.

It is a fact both the Left and the Right do not oppose the Nuclear Power per se. The B.J.P. leader of the N.D.A. wing opposes that the Agreement would have its impact on the Country's strategic nuclear programme and the problem of separation of civil and nuclear programme.

The Left cautioned the Government not to accept nuclear cooperation with the U.S.A. on terms that compromises its independent foreign policy and sovereign right for self-reliant nuclear programme. Besides, the provisions of the Hyde Act contain provisions to coerce India to accept the strategic goals of the U.S.A.

The other stream of opinions gathered from people's movements, emphasis that the theater of nuclear arms race has been shifted now to the Asian Countries, more particularly, amplifying the idea of nuclear nationalism, and shifting focus from realities that emerge for conciliation and consolidation among the countries like Pakistan, China, and others.

In a nuclear confrontation, none of the Countries are spared and the result will bring catastrophe to one and all. Moreover, the solution to power crisis not only lies in nuclear power generation. we have seen for the last 60 years, the Department of Atomic Energy has frittered away Plan Funds and it could produce only less than 3% of the electricity needs of the country. The Rhode Island Disaster in the U.S.A. and the Chrnobyl holocaust in former Soviet Union ,speak volumes of potential danger fraught with the Nuclear Installations.

The pursuit of nuclear energy is prohibitively higher than other forms of renewable energy. The D.A.E's budget is ten times more than the budget for development of renewable energy technologies. India must reverse its priorities and invest more in wind, solar, biomass and micro hydel energy resources.

India needs an energy policy that is safe, cost-effective, renewable, sustainable and satisfies the needs of the majority of Indians.
