Continuing Blaze in Suzlon !

(This reflection was in the draft stage written about a decade ago after learning about the environment disaster at Thiruvandarkoil, Puducherry)

Newspapers in Puducherry, Yesterday carried a news item that in an industry(MNC) , manufacturing components for Windmills in Thiruvandorkoil, puducherry, employing about 2000 workers, mostly contract labourers, fire broke out and engulfed the factory and adjoining Villages, in which lac worth of properties were lost.

The news item did not mention the name of the Industry but detailed the accident occurred in the yard of the Industry, where plastic and other wastes generated during the manufacture of the Windmills got dumped in the open for years, without timely clearance and disposal by the Company.

The fire service units in the State requisitioned could not douse the fire, as a result assistance from neighboring Villupuram and Cuddalore Districts of Tamilnadu also sought and combined their effort, to put out the blaze for the last two days.

Yet, they could not succeed in their fight, till date. The toxic fumes polluted the air and soon the ambience turned inhospitable.People in the villages suffocated and swooned.More than 20 villagers were admitted.

The people in the Village had already reported their anxiety to the authorities on the piling up of chemical garbages and wastes in the open within the precincts of the Industry causing health hazards and dangers to public life by polluting the atmosphere in the area.

As usual, the Authorities concerned including the Elected Representatives did not heed to the complaints and concerns filed by the people.

Now, the people are seriously affected by the fire raging in the area, covered the ambience with thick billowing chemical fumes and smog affecting the people with nausea, irritation and choking sensation on a large scale.

The Government as usual sent a team for enquiry under the leadership of a Under Secretary to the Government,Department of Science and Technology.

The accident raises serious question that in a Small State like Puducherry, before permitting the Industries to establish their units, the Environment Impact Assessment should be carried out as per the provisions of the Environment Act, by inviting objections from the Public objectively.

In most of the cases this has been held as a ceremony by the Authority concerned.

Right to inhale clean air, and right to life have become a reverie for the people and the question of Governance for the people from local level to the higher level still remain elusive.
