CELEBRATION

The World Environment Day celebrated on 22, June 2007 at the Government High school, Thengaithittu, Puducherry. I am invited by the School to address the Students. The function started at about 3 P.M. about 130 students attended including the teachers. It was a cloudy afternoon, windy climate due to low pressure built in the Bay of Bengal. The introduction started with the usual popular understood theme. Garbage disposal, clean house hold and continuous scavenging etc.

The job before me was tough. I have to, initially, attract the attention of all the students, since the event was scheduled after the close of the session. Everybody was in home going mood. I think i had to some extend succeeded in my endeavour. It was an outdoor gathering, distanced with the raised platform and the public-address system.

The reference materials and its standard i thought could not reach the targetted audience. Even the language and modulation should have to be adjusted to the level understood by them. After too many experiences, it is another experience to experiment with the inputs. The ever expanding live topic of concern to humanity transcending boundaries is to be discussed in simple, understandable lively participative approach is a stupendous task of any social activist.

With these challenges, i dealt the subject drawing their attention to the village they lived. Its landscape, rivers alive and lost, farm lands, coconut grooves, greenleafy vegetables, world famous brinjal, cucumber, artesian wells, their self sustained economy and the joint family system with the local festivals and distinct culture.

The intertwined, inseparable link and interdependence among the forces of Nature, viz. Earth, Water, Air, Space also highlighted. Flora and Fauna on the earth, on water, their bio-diversity were also explained. The scarcity of water and deforestation of forests and their potential threat to the environment including the dangers of Global Warming, understood by them was emphasised.

Apart from the problems enlightened, the alternatives attempted at the Rio Conference, Kyoto Protocol and the ensuing U.N.Climate talks in Bali in pressurising the Industrialised Nations like U.S.A. japan, china, European Union, Russia, Canada, Australia, New Zeland, India etc. to ensure control of carbon emissions discussed.

The local Environment Group actively engaged in presevering the Mangrove Forest covering the area of 20 K.Ms. participated in the Day. Their presence impressed the students community. Some of them are involved in the regular activity of the Group functioning in the Village for many years.

Sharing the ideas and thoughts with others, particularly with the students and budding talents will certainly drive the issues into their hearts and minds. The happenings around us should not be simplified and casually approached. With all the seriousness we should discuss, disseminate and evolve alternatives for a clean, better, sustained environment. Among all celebrations, Environment Day should be the priority.
